Our Impact
Making A Difference in Our County
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is working hard for its constituents. The following are examples of Extension’s impact in the county over the past year.
Securing Clean Drinking Water for Elderly Client
An elderly client with a language barrier contacted the Coweta County Agent in February 2024 to inquire about testing his well water that he was currently drinking and using for general household use. Test results indicated extremely high levels of total coliform and E. coli. Since the client only received social security, he could not afford a new well and did not have access to a municipal water source. The agent contacted the USDA Rural Development office and worked with the client to obtain a $10,000 grant to cover expenses required to access a municipal water source.
Strengthening Communication Skills in Coweta County through 4-H Project Achievement
Coweta County 4-H teaches youth valuable communication skills and provides them the opportunity to practice and be evaluated for the skills they have acquired. In 2024, over 1,700 4-H members in 4th - 12th grades received lessons from the Coweta County 4-H staff on how to effectively plan, write, and present oral presentations to an audience. 101 4-H youth competed in 4-H Project Achievement public speaking competition at the county, district, and state levels.
Helping State Inmates to Help Themselves by Teaching ServSafe Food Handlers Course
Coweta County State inmates can struggle with unemployment once they return back to society. This can make them more prone to recidivism and returning to the correctional system. To address this, ServSafe Food Handlers certification was offered to a group of inmates at the Coweta County prison to improve food safety as they cook for the senior center daily as well as other civic events. The certification program equips them with a marketable skill once they are released so they can be gainfully employed.
