Family & Consumer Sciences
The program area of Family and Consumer Science (FACS) addresses the unique challenge of chronic illness prevention in our daily lives. Through programming involving areas of nutrition, food preservation, physical activity, financial management, home improvement and safety, and healthy relationship development FACS Agents work alongside their local communities to cultivate positive behavior changes and sustainability within Georgia. The Family and Consumer Science program area reached more than 800 people, providing information about healthy eating, chronic disease prevention, and food safety in 2019.
In the recent year, Dougls County FACS has conducted multiple nutrition seminars for the senior demographic, addressed the high incidence of senior fall accidents through physical activity and education programming, collaborated with Douglas County 4-H to empower youth cooking skills in a Farm-to-Fork food club, and has begun increased awareness and education efforts related to the increasingly present "silent killer" known as Radon which is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Checkout what FACS is up to and let us know how we can better help address chronic illness prevention in our local community.
