Our Impact
Making A Difference in Our County
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is working hard for its constituents. The following are examples of Extension’s impact in the county over the past year.
Agriculture and Natural Resources
Taylor County is well known for its annual Strawberry Festival, but we grow more than this spring favorite.? Growers in the county produce a variety of commodities from peaches to pastures and turfgrass to corn accounting for over $80,000,000 in farmgate value. ? Our office services the needs of commercial producers, outdoor enthusiasts and over 8,000 non-farming residents equally.
We accomplish this by providing information to citizens in multiple formats.? Weekly newspaper articles are a great way to reach clients and increase awareness of our programs and expertise.?? We continue to provide information to local news outlets but have also shifted to electronic formats like 4 blogs to provide information to our clientele and others across the state.
We provide and coordinate state-wide programming in both peach and strawberry production to growers and agents impacting the entire southeast.? Our office is sought after for assistance with agricultural related news stories locally, statewide and nationally.
Family and Consumer Sciences
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension places non-biased, research-based information at your fingertips on topics including food safety, nutrition, preservation, child development, parenting skills, personal financial management, housing and healthy living habits.? Our office continues to serve clientele in this program area by collaborating with agents in neighboring counties and using resources provided by state specialist.
4-H Youth Development
Taylor County 4-H is working with schools to provide in-person extracurricular opportunities for youth and provide programming that can be enjoyed by the entire family.
A favorite for our students is the summer camping program.? The camping program is tops in the nation and our students can't wait for the opportunity to visit one of the five state 4-H centers.?? Our biggest program has got to be our S.A.F.E. Shotgun Team.? With over 30 team members and 10 certified coaches this program is another one that students look forward to once they reach 6th grade.
Our Poultry Judging team continues to improve it's knowledge and competes at area and state events.? Participation and interest in livestock continues to increase with students exhibiting swine and horses and interest in goats and cattle.? Fishing club is a great way for our youth to learn about Georgia fisheries and wet a hook in some nice local fishing holes.? Finally, our youth volunteer at local festivals and events benefiting all the residents of Taylor County.
